For hundreds of years, during funeral processions for mayors (Bürgermeisters) in Hamburg, it was customary to distribute small silver coins to students singing ahead of the hearse along with other mourners. In the late 1600s, families of mayors decided to start minting their own coins for this purpose.
This example was struck for Martin Lucas Schele who was Bürgermeister from 1733-1751. This example features a well designed urn on the reverse. Very few examples of any Bürgermeisterpfennig from this time period have survived in this state of preservation.
